Team Spotlight: Stephanie Mekal, LCSW

We are excited to give you all the opportunity to better get to know one of our great clinicians, Stephanie Mekal, LCSW. Stephanie works with women and teen girls on a variety of concerns. She does an excellent job helping her clients who struggle with anxiety and self-esteem and she brings an element of fun to her therapeutic work with things like paint, clay, and games. Stephanie is a hardworking, upbeat member of our team. Let’s get to know Stephanie!

Hi Stephanie! How long have you worked in the mental health field?

“Almost 5”

What made you want to become a therapist?

“My own relationship with mental health, especially during my teenage years. I remember how hard being a teenager was and realize just how impactful it would’ve been to have some extra support. I've always loved connecting with people and I believe everyone deserves a space to feel seen and heard. Learning about mental health, whether through courses or reading, has always been and continues to be so engaging and energizing to me!”

What area of women’s mental health are you most passionate about?

“Teens, relationship issues, self esteem, body image”

What advice would you give someone who is just getting started in therapy?

“It’s okay to be nervous! Starting therapy is a big and vulnerable step that you should be proud of. You don’t have to have all the ‘right’ answers or feel like you have to show up in a certain way. Your therapist is there to ground you and guide you, not to judge!”

What would you be voted “most likely to_____”?

“Probably most likely to ask to pet your dog; I love animals and used to raise service puppies in training!“

What's your favorite thing about being a therapist?

“It's hard to choose just one thing! I truly admire the strength and openness my clients show in our work together. I also really enjoy connecting with colleagues who are just as passionate and supportive, and I love that this field prioritizes continued learning.”

What do you like to do in your free time?

“Try new restaurants, spend time outside, read, spend time with loved ones"

Tell us what you love most about working with your clients.

“I love working with so many unique, resilient, funny, and engaging people. I'm continually inspired not just by clients’ strength and growth in therapy, but also by their passions, perspectives, and lives outside of our sessions.”

And finally, what is your personal top self care skill?

“Listening to music or being in nature”

Thank you Stephanie, it’s been so nice to hear from you and I know our readers will enjoy getting to know you better.
